This year’s International Human Rights Day theme is: “Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All” with the call to action for us all to ‘#StandUp4 Human Rights’. Although HRCSL has the statutory mandate to protect and promote human rights, we recognize that this mandate cannot be done by the Commission alone - it is the collective responsibility of all of us in ‘Making Rights Real’.

This day has been set aside by the African Union to remind African Union Member States of their responsibilities to protect and promote human rights. To this Charter, Sierra Leone is a party. Being a state party to the charter, makes it legally binding on states to implement the provisions in the charter meant for all citizens to enjoy their human rights.

The HRCSL in its general monitoring role has been monitoring different social media platforms
which have recently been flooded with hate messages and diatribes from Sierra Leoneans both
within and outside the country with the aim of inciting civil and political unrest and ultimately bringing the State to a standstill.
